In Bloom: The New York Botanical Garden

I traveled through damp rainforests, arid desserts, lush gardens and deep woods. All in on afternoon. All in New York City.

Here are some postcards from my recent trip to the New York Botanical Garden. The Orchid Show: Cuba in Flowers, is the current attraction. Tickets, $20 each.

Admire and celebrate the beauty of the Earth.

omg, i can't believe i've never been there! i grew up within 1.5 hours of the city, and i have always meant to go and never done it. thanks for the reminder. this spring or summer i have to make sure to actually get there! do you have any favorite parks or gardens in bergen co? i'm still pretty new here and trying to figure out where there is to go besides ringwood and flat rock that's pretty and fun to walk around.

btw, i don't know if you're on facebook but if you are i'm doing a promotion for Kathy where if you get 5 friends to become a fan of Beautiful Little Secret you can get a coupon for a discount off your next purchase. Thought I'd let you know in case you're interested or want to post it on your blog or whatever.

This was my second visit. You wouldn't believe the things I've never done (i.e., gone to the top of the Empire State Building, visited the Statue of Liberty). People come from all over and I live less than an hour away!

You might like the Tenafly Nature Center. I've only been there once for a maple syrup demo and a short hike.

Van Saun County Park in Paramus is lovely, a favorite of the family dog.

I'm not on Facebook. I hope to get to Beautiful Little Secret soon. Hopefully tomorrow in fact!

Thanks for the photos. They are lovely. I don't know why Nature, in its eternal wisdom and resiliency, allowed humankind to germinate and grow into its most destructive nemesis.

Saddle River Park is approx. 5 miles long, and is a great place for walking and biking especially on week days. Flat Rock is wonderful for spotting deer and snapping turtles. I've seen snakes there too. Shepherd Lake in Ringwood is a nice place to sit in a lawn chair and read.

Chessfbuff, thanks very much for the compliment and the good tips about the parks.

I go back to what Werner Herzog's scientists in Antarctica contended in "Encounters at the End of the World" – nature will regulate us. I think it is already doing that.

I've been to Van Saun Park, which was nice... I even went to the zoo, even though zoos generally depress me. Tenafly Nature Center... I hadn't even heard of it! Thanks so much, I'll check it out. I really do love Ringwood, have you been there?

I've been to Ringwood once on a women's hike, it was quite lovely.

I know what you mean about the zoos. I haven't been in years, but I cannot forget the pacing of a caged wild cat. A caged owl was also a sad memory imprint. I'm not one for keeping anything in cages.

I've only done river and park clean-ups with them, but you might want to check out the Hackensack Riverkeeper's eco-programs:

Happy trails!
